How to add email template and send email in Magento

Posted on March 12th, 2013 | Posted by admin

this is quite a popular task for every Magento site. And you can found many tutorials for this which show you how to create and add Magento template email via XML file. However I’m sure that many people are wondering about Transactions Emails under Magento -> Configuration. Why don’t we use it? And how can we use it?

Here I will explain for you. Basically you can use either email template defined via XML file or stored in database (added via Transactions Emails). And we use same way to send email with these templates. Here is how you can setup code for sending email

magento trace code from xml to template

Posted on January 24th, 2013 | Posted by admin

I have beed doing this for quite some time. So i thought lets write it down on the blog as well, so that it is more clear for any one starting with magento. Here is the thing in magento once the control reaches the xml, it finds the corresponding template files to render. So suppose you are on the sales order view page in the admin. So the corresponding xml is lets say sales.xml. Now there will be a block written like this.

<block type=”adminhtml/template” name=”gift_options” template=”sales/order/giftoptions.phtml”>

Now i will explain what each element means here.

First “adminhtml/template” this means that the related block which will call this xml is adminhtml/template, so go to the app/code/core/Mage/Adminhtml/Block/Template.php. The file Template.php is what the block refers to for the functions in the template file “giftoptions.phtml”. Please note that i have highlighted the elements in bold in the path which are used to trace the code.

Insert Static Block content in template

Posted on December 8th, 2012 | Posted by admin

As magento describes that when we want to add any static block in our magento template, we must add some lines of codes in the XML file. Then we are able to attach related static block in our template. Sometimes we are in hurry and don’t want to update the XML file to insert code in our template. So we can use the following code to insert any static block directly in our template. We just want to make a call to this function :

<?php echo $this->getLayout()->createBlock('cms/block')->setBlockId('required_cms_block_identifier')->toHtml() ?>

So, By using this code in the template will automatically fetch the content from the static block and insert into our template
