I spent quite a while trying to work out how to remove the Recurring Profile and Billing Agreements links from the Customer Account navigation menu in Magento. There are plenty of blog posts and Magento forum topics describing how to comment out or even delete the appropriate lines in the billing_agreement.xml or recurring_profile.xml files like this…

<!-- <reference name="customer_account_navigation" >
<action method="addLink" translate="label"><name>recurring_profiles</name><path>sales/recurring_profile/</path><label>Recurring Profiles</label></action>
</reference> -->

However, like many other developers, here at Optimise Web, we use the local.xml method of configuring our layout. Therefore the above technique does not work. Neither does <action=”unsetChild”>.

Custom SEF Sidebar Navigation For Magento

I wanted to share a quick snippet of code that I created for adding a custom navigation section to your Magento left column area. I currently created this navigation area for a client to replace the layered navigation. The layered navigation has a lot of great features and organization but probably better severs as a multi -select drop down. Also in the previous versions of Magento the layered navigation was not search engine friendly.

This is not currently the case but I still find that there is not enough control over the category / subcategory display within the layered navigation. This custom navigation block could be used above some of the other build in features such as price, manufacturer etc. that is simple to accomplish with the layered navigation.

Also of note, I have found including other SEO centralized developers, that the layered navigation simply refreshs that page, so should you have content on the main category page, the layered navigation link creates confusion becuase the page content continues to display.

It’s been a while since I last time played with beauty of Zend Framework.

Each time I check new features it seems to me that the things are more simplier than the last time,
I might be wrong (I wouldn’t bet on that) or I’m just getting better

Let’s check this piece of cake – how you can create navigation with breadcrumbs in Zend Framework project.
As many things in Zend Framework you can get same features in different ways,
so the same thing goes with the Zend_Navigation class.

First of all you need to decide which way you will choose:
- navigation with xml setup file or
- from application.ini file

I suggest you to try both ways and then choose the one you like most, I’ll show you the both ways.

In Boostrap.php class you need to initialize your navigation.
- xml way tells where your navigation.xml file is:

This post describes how Magento navigation works. I hope it will help you.
The begining of all is in template file: “category/navigation/top.phtml”

<ul id="nav">
< ?php
foreach ($this->getStoreCategories() as $_category): ?>
< ?php
echo $this->drawItem($_category);
?>
< ?php endforeach ?>
</ul>

There we call the method from class Mage_Catalog_Block_Navigation $this->getStoreCategories(). This method returns the array $_nodes from object Varien_Data_Tree_Node_Collection.
