Magento do not provide any easy way to change its admin theme or template. Some time back I had a task to change size of an image displaying for category in admin panel of magento. I could not just overwrite or change the default core admin theme. After some searches I got a fine solution. That goes with Magento quite well.
Here is a step by step tutorial to be able to change the theme of admin panel or say backend of Magento.

Step 1
Create a new module. Yes, you have to create a new module for that.
So go into your local folder of code and create the following folders. App/code/local/Packagename/AdminHtml/etc
Create config.xml in etc folder. In this file write the following code.

Magento is a full-featured e-commerce solution which uses a proprietary template structure combining various functionality from XML, HTML and PHP together to create dynamic and secure catalog pages and customer management features. By default, Magento places its own tagline and copyright information in the footer which may be undesirable. This information is stored in the “footer.phtml” file and easily modified, however, locating the file to change can be challenging and may vary depending on the Magento theme being used.
Instructions

Connect to your Web server and enter your active theme folder located under “app/design/frontend.” This folder should contain two sub-folders, “Base” and “Default.”

If you need to change the Price Range in your Magento catalog go to:

app/code/core/Mage/Catalog/Model/Layer/Filter/Price.php

Look for the line:

$range = pow(10, (strlen(floor($maxPrice))-$index));

Change the 10 for a lower / higher number.

Tested in the 1.4 version

Today i’m showing you one. There is no backend option to change the Default Sort Order in your product listing (catalog).

Lucky there is an easy solution.

Look for the file toolbar.php located in:

/app/code/core/Mage/Catalog/Block/Product/List
