How to Connect a New Magento Installation to Old Database

Posted on August 30th, 2014 | Posted by admin

We’ve been getting lots of calls on how to get new Magento installations installed in subfolders to work with existing databases. Lots of folks want to test fresh installations of Magento on their servers, so here’s how to connect your new installation to your old database.

FTP your new Magento installation to the subfolder. Now open the /public_html/app/etc/local.xml file and file the following xml data:

        <username><![CDATA[Enter your database username here]]></username>
        <password><![CDATA[Enter your database password here]]></password>
<dbname><![CDATA[Enter the name of your database here]]></dbname>

How to show out of stock products in magento

Posted on August 29th, 2014 | Posted by admin

If you want to show/display out of stock products in magento than follow this:

Magento has several criteria for determining if an item should be visible in the store, but one of these is not whether or not the item is in stock. Magento can manage your stock and will set your stock status to “Out of Stock” for you, but what if you want these out of stock items to be hidden from the store.. automatically? Also, in my case I do not want to “disable” the item because the inventory management system will then ignore it. Turns out this was much more difficult to figure out than I expected it to be but the end solution was quite simple.

A. Login to Magento back-end
B. Go to menu System >> Configuration.
C. Take inventory tab from the left panel
D. Set Display out of stock products to ‘Yes’ in Stock options tab in the right panel

Manually change magento admin password

Here is how to manually change magento admin password.

Magento uses pretty simple password hashing algorithm:

UPDATE admin_user
SET password=CONCAT(md5('<salt><pass>'),':<salt>')
WHERE user_id=<your id>

where <salt> – any string, <pass> – your new password.
Don’t forget the semicolon.
